Aside from the services given to the children in the program, Stairway also provides various forms of assistance to the community of Puerto Galera. These take the form of Scholarship Grants and Crisis Intervention.
Scholarship Grants
Every year, Stairway gives scholarship grants to poor but deserving children in the community. Hundreds of students have been given some form of financial assistance since this program was implemented. For the academic year 2008-2009, over 70 scholars have enjoyed transportation assistance through the free use of Stairway’s school bus service.
Stairway’s elementary and high school scholars are divided into groups and each group reports to Stairway once a month to help clean up the beach and the roadside. This is to plant in them the seed of social concern and respect for the environment. All scholars are also required to attend educational sessions such as the Convention on the Rights of the Child/Child Sexual Abuse Prevention workshop for them to take part of Stairway’s advocacy program against child sexual abuse and promotion of children’s rights. This year, they will also be given an Orientation on Online Safety to promote responsible and safe online behaviors.
Crisis Intervention
The local Social Welfare Department also occasionally refers sexually abused children to Stairway for therapeutic interventions and even case management. Stairway’s senior social ensures that all referrals are responded to and properly endorsed to authorities once the therapeutic interventions are completed.
